AREA COLLEGE STUDENTS COMPETE IN ELEVATOR PITCH COMPETITION
Amanda Schlosky took first place in the Elevator Pitch Competition held during the 6th Annual Awards Banquet for the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative on Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke. The Bay Path College student pitched Popper Stopper: the innovative new ear plug device that takes the painful pressure out of flying and was awarded $1000. The second prize of $750 was awarded to Lucy Gent from Smith College who presented Solar Car Shade which allows you to protect your car from damaging sunlight while generating electricity at the same time. The third place prize of $500 went to Tynsha Blanks from Holyoke Community College who pitched Snack Backs, a handy food storage system to keep food fresh and accessible in a backpack.
The competition was funded by six area banks and officials from the banks also served as judges for the event. They were: Lynn Brown, VP of Commercial Lending, Bank of Western Massachusetts; Dennis Keefe, Senior VP of Commercial Lending, Berkshire Bank; Jim Algie, Senior VP, Country Bank for Savings; Joe Shaw, VP of Business Banking, New Alliance Bank, Kathy Mullin; VP, PeoplesBank; and Tony Franco, VP of Commercial Lending, United Bank.
Each student who presented a business idea in the competition won $100. The following colleges participated: American International College, Bay Path College, Elms College, Greenfield Community College, Hampshire College, Holyoke Community College, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Springfield Technical Community College, University of Massachusetts, Western New England College and Westfield State College.

BAY PATH STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Deborah DarlingRaphael has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. DarlingRaphael, who is pursuing a degree in legal studies at Bay Path College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
A resident of Conway, DarlingRaphael founded Building U Solutions after seeing many of her insurance customers struggle to find affordable housing. She consolidated several of her successful smaller businesses to launch her new umbrella company. Her clients can now purchase supplemental insurance (including accident and disability, long term care and life insurance) from her, as well as debt consolidation and mortgage loans. Additionally, DarlingRaphael’s new venture offers the sales and installation of prefabricated homes to would-be homeowners in the Pioneer Valley. Her clients can choose from contemporary and traditional homes from the variety of blueprints she has available for viewing. She ships her pre-constructed homes from Georgia, and works with a team of contractors to take all steps necessary to get her clients into their new homes.

Gayle Hsiao of Wilbraham has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Hsiao, who recently graduated from Bay Path College with an MBA degree, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
Hsiao’s business model TSE (Team Supported Entrepreneurship), has been adopted by the New England Business Associate’s Business Consulting Center. Located in the Scibelli Enterprise Center at Springfield Technical Community Collge, NEBA BCC provides support to people with disabilities who want to establish their own business. TSE was developed by Hsiao in order to provide a sustainable program template that those with disabilities can utilize to operate their business and achieve self-sufficiency. Entrepreneurship classes, ongoing coaching, information resources, technical assistance and access to capital are some of the services currently provided.

WEST SPRINGFIELD WOMAN RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Tania Spear has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Spear, who is pursuing a Master’s of Science in Nursing at Elms College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
Spear, a resident of West Springfield, established TKS Health Services, a direct care nursing service specializing in pediatrics. By providing high quality, holistic care to children in the comfort of their homes, Spear hopes to ease the burden on their families.

RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Stephen T. Akberg has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Akberg, who is pursuing degrees in both Film and Entrepreneurship at Hampshire College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
A native of Kraainem, Belgium, Akberg is the founder of Simply Waffles AKBI, LLC. He plans to sell authentic Belgian waffles from a hybrid mobile unit that would run on used cooking oil and solar energy.

STCC STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Rocco Barile has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Barile, who is pursuing a degree in Landscape Design and Management Technology at Springfield Technical Community College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
A native of Enfield, CT, Barile established Barile’s Landscape Construction, LLC in 2007. He currently handles primarily residential landscaping and snow removal jobs. He enjoys “hardscaping” projects as well, building retaining walls, patios and walkways. Barile plans to transfer to the University of Massachusetts to study Urban Forestry in the fall.

UMASS STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Robert Daniello has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Daniello, a PhD track graduate student in the department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
Daniello founded his company Precision Slip, after developing a laboratory proven coating technology that significantly reduces drag, which is the effort required to keep a ship moving through the water. When its hull is coated with Precision Slip’s product, the average merchant ship will experience an overall reduction of 30-40% of total drag and fuel consumption. A single Suezmax tanker, one of the 30,000+ large merchant vessels in service, would save $1.8 million per year. In doing so, they would also effect a 40% carbon footprint reduction; fully implemented, they could eliminate almost 3% of the world’s present NOX emissions.

AIC STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Matthew M. Gagnon of Southampton has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Gagnon, who is pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration at American International College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
Gagnon founded DJ Intercept DJ Services, a family owned and family operated company offering professional entertainment services for every occasion, including birthday parties, graduation parties, Jack & Jill’s, weddings and more. DJ Intercept DJ Services also works in collaboration with country clubs, restaurants and other venues to provide some of the best nightlife entertainment in the area providing dance music, dinner music, hip-hop and karaoke.

HCC STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Claire Kenna has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Kenna, who is pursuing a degree in business at Holyoke Community College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
Kenna, a resident of Westfield, MA, established Good Scents Garden Company, a full spectrum gardening service specializing in sustainable landscaping. Kenna’s is an ecologically responsible company, using no synthetic chemicals. She encourages her clients to begin composting, instead of using expensive store-bought fertilizer.

ELMS COLLEGE STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Jaimie Lee Martin of Willington, CT, has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Martin, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in marketing at Elms College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
Martin’s venture, Integra Health Care Card, utilizes the latest technology and will save time and money for consumers as well as reducing medical fraud and abuse. The card will hold a patient’s insurance information in addition to their complete medical records. Martin and her research and development team will create a password protected, anti-theft computer software system that will interface with a government database used by doctors, pharmacists and other health care professionals.

RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Hannah Shaw has been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. Shaw, who recently earned a degree in Design from Hampshire College, will be among the students honored at the Foundation’s annual banquet to be held Wednesday, April 29th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA.
Shaw, from Brooklyn, NY, is the founder of Hannah Shaw Dresses and Design offering a line of avant garde cocktail dresses. Inspired by industrial as well as natural materials such as wire, paint, plastic, paper, wood, stones and found objects, Shaw pairs these materials with more refined and elegant ones. The results are unique dresses that are also wearable works of art.
