GRINSPOON SPIRIT AWARD WINNER CONTINUES PITCH-PERFECT WINNING STREAK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Malanowski also won the Spirit Award at the 2007 Grinspoon competition for coming up with the idea for a business she calls Beginning Beauty. She was inspired by her work in makeup and skin care as an aesthetician. From working on lots of mothers, Malanoski learned that many of their daughters in the 11 to 13 age bracket had started using makeup but did not know how to apply it. Her business would teach them that as well as give out sanitation tips on how long to keep mascara and other advice.

A marketing major, Malanowski said she first became interested in salesmanship while working two years as an eyewear consultant at LensCrafters at the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside. "I consider myself a real people person," Malanowski said. "I consider selling helping people."

A 2003 graduate of Granby Junior-Senior High School, Malanowski said her goal in high school was to become a makeup artist and work with stars and celebrities. However, one of her English teachers, James Mulhern, noted her facility with English and persuaded her to go to college. She went on to Holyoke Community College and received an associate degree in marketing there in 2006.

Malanowski's next competitive adventure will be taking part in the Wake Forest MBA Competition for Social Entrepreneurship in March at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. For that she has dreamed up a new potential business she calls Speak Up, which would be a public speaking seminar for young girls. For the future, Malanowski said she is hopeful of attending either business school or law school.

LOCAL WOMEN RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Northampton resident Jessica Harwood is being recognized for her accomplishments as an entrepreneur while a student at Smith College in Northampton.  Her business venture: Farm- fresh, Environmental and Sustainable Sustenance or FEAST, is a food delivery service that will bring fresh, local food to the residents of the Pioneer Valley while helping to support local farmers. By delivering locally grown and produced food, FEAST will dramatically cut down on the environmental impact that importing food from a distance can have.    FEAST customers will be able to order local meat, dairy, produce and prepared foods, including soups, casseroles, quiches, pies and other baked treats.

Jamaica resident Jennifer Sochin Connor was recently recognized for her accomplishments as an entrepreneur while a student at Smith College in Northampton, MA. Ms. Connor, who anticipates graduating in 2010, recently started her own business, Jennie Blue, while attending school full-time. Jennie Blue offers hand-painted, personalized ceramic pieces that capture and celebrate life’s most special events. From baby bowls to special birthdays, weddings to anniversaries, reunions, retirement or a depiction of a family tree, each commissioned piece is created through collaboration with the client, resulting in a gift that is both meaningful and deeply personal.

The Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative will be honoring Ms. Harwood at their annual banquet on April 15th at The Log Cabin.

In the 2006-2007 academic year, Mr. Harold Grinspoon, through the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative, recognized over 30 students attending colleges and universities in the Pioneer Valley for demonstrating the “entrepreneurial spirit”. Individual awards ranged from $500 to $3,800. It is anticipated that a similar number of students will be recognized this year as well.
